The right conference table fits your team and still leaves room to walk around it. Enter your headcount and room size below and we will recommend a size, draw it in your room, and point out the details most people miss, from screen size to getting a long top through the door.

Conference table size chart

Seating assumes about 30 inches per person in executive chairs, one seat at each end, and smaller chairs at 24 inches for the “up to” number. Room sizes include the table plus chairs and walkways on every side.

How much space you need around a conference table

Measure from the edge of the table to the wall. That space has to hold a pushed-back chair and still let people move around the room.

36 inches: the minimum

Enough to pull out a chair and stand up. People will turn sideways to get past someone who is seated. Fine for a small room that is used for short meetings.

48 inches: the comfortable target

Someone can walk behind a seated person without anyone scooting in. This is what we recommend for most conference rooms.

60 inches: spacious and accessible

Leaves room for a wheelchair to turn and for catering or a presenter to move along the table. Worth planning for in boardrooms and client-facing rooms.

A credenza or sideboard along one wall takes about 20 inches of that space, so add it to your room width before you choose a table.

How wide should a conference table be?

Width is a balance. Too narrow and laptops, notepads and coffee crowd each other. Too wide and people across the table feel far away and cannot pass papers. As a guide:

Up to 9 feet long: 42 inches wide. 10 to 14 feet: 48 inches. 15 to 19 feet: 54 inches. 20 feet and longer: 60 inches. If your room is narrow, it is better to drop to the next width down than to squeeze your walkways.

How much space each person needs

The chair decides the spacing more than the table does. Allow about 26 inches of table edge per person for task chairs, 30 inches for executive chairs, and 34 inches for large executive chairs with wide arms. 24 inches is the tightest that works, and it is best kept for the occasional all-hands meeting.

Planning for screens and video calls

If you meet on video, keep one end of the table open for the display and camera. That end loses a seat, so size the table one step longer if you need it. To size the screen, measure from the screen wall to the farthest seat and divide by about 3. The result is the smallest screen, in inches, that everyone can read. Long tables over 16 feet also benefit from a ceiling or table microphone so people at the far end are heard.

Power at the table matters as much as the screen. Plan about one power box for every four seats, set down the center so cords never cross the top. We build power boxes and wire grommets into our tops.

Getting a long table into the building

The most common surprise is not the room, it is the path to it. Before you order, measure door openings, hallway turns, stairwells, and if you are above the ground floor, the elevator door and inside depth. Long tops can be built in two pieces with a tight, supported seam so they carry in safely. Include those measurements with your quote request and we will plan the build around them.

Rectangle, boat or racetrack?

A rectangle seats the most people for its length and suits most rooms. A boat shaped top is wider in the middle and narrower at the ends, so everyone along the sides can see each other and the screen. A racetrack top has rounded ends that soften a long room and remove corners people bump into. Boat and racetrack tops are built to order. Request a quote for either shape.

Frequently asked questions

What size conference table do I need for 10 people?

Plan an 11 to 12 foot table that is 48 inches wide. That seats 10 people comfortably in executive chairs at about 30 inches each, and up to 12 in smaller chairs. With 48 inches of walkway on every side, the room should be at least 19 feet by 12 feet.

How much space do you need around a conference table?

Leave at least 36 inches from the table edge to the wall so people can pull out a chair and stand up. 48 inches is the comfortable target because someone can walk behind a seated person. Plan 60 inches if you want room for a wheelchair to turn.

How much space does each person need at a conference table?

Allow about 30 inches of table edge per person for executive chairs, 26 inches for task chairs, and 34 inches for large executive chairs. 24 inches per person is the tightest that works, and it is best kept for occasional large meetings.

How wide should a conference table be?

Most tables up to 9 feet long work well at 42 inches wide. Tables from 10 to 14 feet are usually 48 inches wide, 15 to 19 feet are 54 inches, and 20 feet and longer are 60 inches. Wider than that makes it hard to talk and pass papers across the table.

What size room do I need for a 12 person conference table?

A 12 person table is usually 14 feet by 48 inches. For comfortable 48 inch walkways the room should be about 22 feet by 12 feet. With tight 36 inch walkways, 20 feet by 10 feet can work.

Will a long conference table fit through my doors and elevator?

Long tops can be built in two pieces with a tight, supported seam so they carry through doors, stairwells and passenger elevators. Measure your door widths, the elevator door and inside depth, and any tight turns, and include them with your quote request so we can plan it.

What size screen do I need for my conference room?

Measure from the screen wall to the eyes of the farthest seat and divide by about 3. That gives the smallest screen size in inches that everyone can read comfortably. On a 12 foot table that usually means a 75 to 85 inch display.

Can you build a conference table in a custom size?

Yes. Our conference tables are built to order from 7 to 24 feet long and 36 to 72 inches wide, in counter and bar heights as well as the standard 30 inches. For larger rooms we build multi-piece tables and custom shapes such as boat and racetrack tops.
