Walnut Reception Desks: Heights, Sizing & the Collection

Walnut reception desks need two heights: a 29 to 30 inch staff work surface and a 41 to 42 inch transaction counter facing the visitor. Get those wrong and the desk fights the person sitting at it every day for twenty years.

Black walnut is the darkest and warmest species we build in, which is why it turns up in lobbies that want to feel established rather than clinical. Every desk below is built to your dimensions. See the full commercial collection for the rest of the range.

Why choose walnut reception desks

Reception Desk in Black Walnut - Clear Finish, a corporate lobby
  • It reads warm, not corporate. Walnut has chocolate and purple undertones that soften a lobby full of glass and stone.
  • It hides wear. A dark top shows scuffs far less than a pale one, and a reception desk takes more abuse than any other piece in the building.
  • It is solid all the way through. A gouge sands out. In year fifteen the whole top can be sanded back and re-oiled.
  • It photographs well. Which matters, because the reception desk is in the background of every photo anyone takes of your office.

The trade-off is honest: at 1,010 lbf on the Janka scale walnut is softer than white oak at 1,360. It dents more easily. In a high-traffic clinic or a school we would point you at oak. In a law office, a wealth management lobby or a private practice, walnut is the right call.

The two heights, and the ADA rule

Surface Height What it is for
Staff work surface 29 to 30 in Keyboard, monitor, scheduling. Comfortable seated all day.
Transaction counter 41 to 42 in Hides the monitor from the lobby, gives visitors a place to sign.
ADA accessible section 34 to 36 in Required portion, at least 36 in long, on the accessible route.

The 2010 ADA Standards require a sales or service counter to include a portion at least 36 inches long and no higher than 36 inches above the floor. We build the lowered return into the desk rather than bolting it on. Confirm the full route with your architect, because the rest of it matters as much as the counter does.

Sizing a walnut reception desk

Reception Desk in Black Walnut - Clear Finish, an executive lobby
Length Staff Depth Fits
60 to 72 in One 32 in Small practice, single greeter
84 in One, comfortably 32 to 36 in The most specified size
96 to 120 in Two side by side 36 in Busy lobby, check-in rush
132 in and up Two, separated 36 in Check-in and check-out split, or an L with a return
  • Depth under 32 inches cannot hold a monitor, a keyboard, a card reader and paperwork at once.
  • Two staff need 96 inches minimum or they are in each other’s way at the busy hour.
  • An L-shaped return adds working surface without adding lobby footprint.
  • Cable management is cut at build time. Retrofitting grommets into a finished walnut top is visible.
  • Anything over 10 feet ships in bolted sections.

Finishes, and what disinfectant does to them

Reception Desk in Black Walnut - Clear Finish, a reception area

A reception desk gets wiped down several times a day, every day. That is the failure mode nobody plans for, and it is the reason we finish in hardwax oil rather than sprayed lacquer.

  • Clear oil keeps walnut’s natural depth and darkens slightly with age. The default.
  • Rubio Black takes walnut almost to charcoal with the grain still reading through. Suits a lobby that wants weight.
  • Repairs in place. A scuff is fixed with a pad and more oil, not a full strip and respray.
  • Lacquer chips. Once it does, the only fix is stripping the whole top, which is why we do not use it on commercial furniture.

The reception desk collection

Every desk is built to your lobby dimensions in the species and finish you choose. The sizes each model is drawn at are a starting point, not a limit.

Specifying yours

Send the lobby dimensions, how many people work the desk at once, and whether check-in and check-out need separating. We come back with a layout and a drawing before anything is built.

Frequently asked questions

What height should a reception desk be?

Two heights. The staff work surface sits at 29 to 30 inches. The transaction counter facing the visitor sits at 41 to 42 inches. ADA requires an accessible portion at least 36 inches long and no higher than 36 inches above the floor.

Is walnut a good wood for a reception desk?

Yes, where the lobby should feel warm and established. Walnut is darker than oak, hides scuffs better and is solid throughout so it refinishes. It is softer at 1,010 lbf against oak’s 1,360, so for very high traffic we would point you at white oak instead.

How long does a reception desk need to be?

Sixty to 72 inches works for one person, 84 inches is comfortable. Two staff side by side need 96 to 120 inches. Separating check-in from check-out takes 132 inches or an L with a return.

How deep should a reception desk be?

Thirty-two to 36 inches. Anything shallower cannot hold a monitor, keyboard, card reader and paperwork without pushing equipment onto the visitor side of the counter.

Can you build a walnut reception desk to our exact lobby size?

Yes. Every desk is built to order in the dimensions, species and finish you choose, with no upcharge for a size that fits your room instead of a stock dimension.
